I was 14 years old. It was Friday night. Mum and Dad were out, my sister had a sleep-over at her best friend's house.
I was alone watching TV.I saw the movie titles in a channel and said what the hell lets watch this.
It was a movie with Mel Gibson, Jamie Lee Curtis and the very young Elijah Wood way before his big shot chance in Lord of the Rings.
It was a typical chick flick with romance and love that was kind of left in the middle. The typical exisosis for hollywood entertainment. I was too young then to be blase about Hollywood, and today i am similarily too old to be.
So the film is the story of a 2nd world war pilot that is in love with his girfriend wants to propose but he is shy. she has a car accident and he grief-stricken asks his best friend to use him as a guinea pig for a cryogenics experiment. He wants to be frozen for a year so that he doesn't have to watch his love lying in a coma. The next thing he knows is that he's been awoken in 1992, young Elijah Wood finds him and takes him in.So evidently Gibson still missing his girfriend has a little "moment" with Elijah's mum, Jamie Lee Curtis and that happens as soon as she puts on a cd of Billie Holiday.
And that was it for me..i was in love, i was mesmerized, i discovered jazz. I felt connected to her voice, her music, her style. I felt like i discovered something.
Mind you, we didn't have the internet back then so i couldnt google her and find clips on youtube. I had to wait for the next day, to go to the record store and buy my first Billie Holiday cd.
And since then she is the best voice, the most amazing thing to hear, the sound that melts me, relaxes me makes me dream, makes me.. well...me.
Better than any of them. So the first song of Billie i ever heard was this one.
And today i feel is a day for Billie and me.
